South Bay Parkland Conservancy is teaming up with US Fish and Wildlife Services, LA County Department of Beaches and Harbor, LA Conservation Corps, the City of Redondo Beach and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy to restore habitat for the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly and other native wildlife along the bluffs of Redondo Beach.

This project will maintain existing habitat restoration on the bluffs between Miramar Park and Avenue E and conduct new restoration between Avenues E and C.

Volunteers will be asked to assist with:

  • weeding out invasive plants

  • installing new native plants (during the rainy season)

  • providing supplemental water to newly installed plants, as needed

    What to bring:

    • Come prepared with clothes that can get dirty and wet!

    • Closed toed shoes/boots

    • Sunscreen

    • Reusable water bottles (drinking fountains located at Avenues G restroom) & snacks

    • Gloves and tools provided, although volunteers are welcome to bring their own

In an ongoing effort to establish wildlife connectivity for the El Segundo Blue Butterfly, the Monarch Butterfly, and other pollinators, SBPC welcomes volunteers out to the Hermosa Greenbelt to restore and enhance native habitat.  

Volunteers will learn about the importance of native plants, and will work to target invasive monocultures (such as ice plant) along the Greenbelt for replacement with California native plants from the Coastal Sage Scrub plant community, with a focus on Seacliff buckwheat (the host plant for the El Segundo blue butterfly) and other native pollinators that bloom in each season.

Please bring:

-Clothes to get dirty in

-Sturdy closed toed shoes

-Water bottle (drinking fountains are available for refill)

-Sunscreen, hat

All tools and gloves provided.

We have a great season ahead of us at Wilderness Park! We will continue our work effort to maintain, water, and weed existing habitat areas, and while preparing new areas to plant.

Volunteers will be asked to assist with:

  • watering native trees (with Tree Gators)

  • hand watering plantings

  • managing hoses

  • weeding out invasive plants

  • digging holes for new native plants

  • planting new natives 

Volunteers shifts are offered every other Sunday from 10-12pm/ 12pm-2pm, and every Tuesday from 10-12pm. 


What to bring:

  • Come prepared with clothes that can get dirty and wet!

  • Closed toed shoes (boots) are preferred.

  • Sunscreen

  • Water (drinking fountains located in park) & snacks

  • Gloves and tools provided, although volunteers are welcome to bring their own.
